Chiranjeevi says sorry after fans beat up 'rival'

HYDERABAD: It's "simply south" with a violent twist: Enraged fans of Telugu megastar Chiranjeevi chased and attacked actor Rajasekhar and his family in the early hours of Monday after he said he wouldn't join the matinee idol's soon-to-be-launched political party because Chiranjeevi was zero on political experience. Rajasekhar had spoken to the media in Bhimavaram on Sunday and was returning to his Film Nagar home in Hyderabad with his director wife Jeevitha and their two children when their car was attacked with stones and iron rods. The actor and his daughters suffered minor injuries.

It's not unusual for fans of stars and megastars down south to get into such scrapes. M G Ramachandran's fans often clashed with the followers of his celluloid rival Sivaji Ganesan, and the tradition — undesirable as it might be — has continued right up to wide-eyed supporters of Kamal Hasan and Rajinikanth settling the issue of who's greater of the two outside beer bars. The assault didn't have a sobering effect on Rajasekhar who launched a blistering attack on the Telugu megastar whom he held responsible for his fans going wild. But in a cinematic anti-climax, even as Rajasekhar and Jeevitha were venting their spleen sitting in a TV studio, Chiranjeevi walked into their home.

Accompanied by his brother-in-law Allu Aravind, Chiranjeevi waited for almost an hour for Rajasekhar to return and played hero with a heart of gold by consoling Rajasekhar's distraught daughters. Chiranjeevi then apologized to Rajasekhar and Jeevitha and condemned the action of his fans. With Rajasekhar satisifed, the megastar walked away. "Chiranjeevi said he didn't know anything about the incident.

But now he knows what happened. Since he's going to start a political party, he should guide his fans in the proper way," Rajasekhar said. He said he didn't want Chiranjeevi to apologize but his intention behind talking to the media was to explain to the world that these things should not happen in a democracy.
